This Week in Photos: Weeks 18 & 19

May 16 - May 30, 2016

These past two weeks have been nutso, which is why I'm again combining two posts.  The reason is mostly below...our new puppy friend!  Her name is Mavis (Mavalis if you're our niece) and she's a ~12 week old lab/border collie/etc mix that we rescued from Farm Friends Rescue.  She was 1 of 8 in her litter and is just the best (there are still a few more up for grabs if anyone is looking for an awesome companion!).  That said, it's a BIG job raising a puppy, and pile that on top of some big deadlines, I've fallen a bit behind on the rest of life.  But it's ok because look at her!

This past Memorial Day weekend we did take a much needed and really relaxing break in the NC mountains, where we enjoyed the company of amazing friends.  En route we stopped to celebrate our newest nephew, Thomas' baptism and play with the kiddos.

All that said, aside from the initial food shot of my yummy quinoa bowl from Happy + Hale, this post is full of puppy and baby cuteness overload.  You've been warned...

ps - the bottle of wine pictured comes from a wicked cool wedding shower present my best friend, Emily gave to me with all of the big "firsts" we'd experience in life as a couple.  After almost 3 years, we're down to 2: First House and First Baby (could be a while)...!

About the project:

If you take a look through my hard drives, you'll find folders and folders of photos, most of which never truly have had their time in the limelight.  These photos are the result of some random moments that I caught while my camera happened to be close by, photowalks from around town, a beautiful instance where the sunlight hit a subject just right, but none of these times warranted a dedicated blog post or feature story on my website.  Many of these photos I really like, but once they're snapped they sadly get lost in the digital abyss to be found months later when I sift through my earlier work just for fun.

To bring some of these lost images to the surface and make sure they get their time to be enjoyed by others, I'm embarking on a journey this year to share my weeks in photos with you all.  Not only will this give me a platform to post the random beauty I see in the world during my day-to-day, but will also encourage me to once again bring my camera with me everywhere so I can be sure to catch those visions once I see them.

This Week in Photos: Week 17

May 9 - May 15, 2016

Confession: I didn't take my camera around much with me last week...But I did bring it along on our weekend adventure around Durham, which started at a trip to the Farmer's Market with our friend Alisa where she got a super cool ring made by the guy pictured below.  Next we headed to the top of the Durham Hotel where we basked in the sun and enjoyed a beverage, and went down to the vault at 21C where we had some fun with the pink penguins.  Bulldega, a new local city grocery store, and Chez Miller were also on the pitstop list.  Last but not least we visited the 21C bathrooms.  Yes, sounds weird, but they're the coolest - they're made of glass that fogs up when you lock it (don't forget to spin it all the way so you can't see out, or everyone can see in!).  #Wedontcare.  I also took an impromptu product shoot for  Mati energy drink in my living room as a pleasant distraction from the work I was supposed to be doing.  Amazing upside of that is they liked the pic I posted so they sent over a case-full as a thank you - best day ever!!

This Week in Photos: Week 16

May 2 - May 8, 2016

During this past week, things were fairly uneventful, sans making some homemade tomato sauce and veggie lasagna.  The week ended though with a quick, yet really wonderful trip home to Boston to celebrate my nephew, Matty receiving his First Communion, and my most amazing mom for Mother's Day.  We landed early on Friday, so Matt and I hit up our old stomping grounds, working for the day at District Hall and grabbing a rice bowl from Bon Me.  Gosh, if Bon Me ventured to Durham someday soon I'd be a very happy girl!

Our ventures took us through the Seaport, which is an entirely new view since we left with all of the new buildings popping up, toward the North End, where we stumbled upon a really cool new art installation on the Rose Kennedy Greenway by Chinese contemporary artist and activist, Ai Weiwei.  His "Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads" is pretty much how it sounds: a circle of 12 giant bronze animal heads that represent the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac surrounding the Ring Fountain in the middle of the city.  It's a really cool and interesting contrast to the city backdrop - made for some interesting pics.

If you're interested, check out more about Ai Weiwei in Artsy.net's 2016 Year in Art feature.

This Week in Photos: Week 15

April 25 - May 1, 2016

This week was really great.  It started off with a delicious dinner with some friends at Acme in Carrboro (no photos here, but the meal was top notch, so check that place out if you're in town!) I was also able to give my alma mater, Elon University a quick visit to help recruit a new Phoenix! I'm pretty sure the school sold itself and my visit didn't sway the decision much, but it was still a great excuse to catch up with an old BCEC co-worker/boss and putz around campus like I was a college student again (Nik made the right choice, Tom!).

The weekend was a great adventure flying solo while Matt was at a bachelor party in Montreal.  I hit up the Durham Farmer's Market for some coffee, people watching and to gather some fresh plants to give my deck garden a go.  I'm hopeful the crops will be bountiful, but we'll see what happens!  Then Sunday, despite the rain and the long trek into the depths of Chapel Hill, me and a couple of dear friends ventured to Honeysuckle Tea House  to enjoy fresh tea, (lots of) cheese, a smoothie bowl and some veggie curry pockets (a strange, yet delicious hodgepodge of food).  I'm looking forward to going back again when the sun is shining!  The eating continued through the evening with a homemade Chicken Pot Pie birthday dinner for the father-in-law.

Please enjoy this week's recap, and thanks for visiting!

This Week in Photos: Week 13 & 14

April 11 - April 24, 2016

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of amazing travel, sister visits, eating (a lot) and snapping photos.  I missed my last week's post because I was in the midst of it all, but today I present you with TWO week's worth of photos.  It started with a trip back home to Boston, which was absolutely amazing.  I caught up with all of my dearest friends, hung out with family, got to take some head shots around the city and capture wedding photos for such a fun and beautiful couple.  Perhaps best of all, I got to visit Dairy Twist for an ice cream cone (black raspberry and coffee twist soft serve with chocolate sprinkles) and was in Heaven.

From there, Matt and I headed back to Durham with my sister, Julie in tow.  Julie and I got out of dodge and headed to the beach for a few days, which was both relaxing and somewhat productive.  We explored Beaufort, ate the greasiest of beach foods and the most tasty desserts and wine, and thoroughly enjoyed the salty air and sunshine.

This past weekend Matt and I did a little adventure of our own through Hillsborough, where we stumbled upon Cate's Corner Farm - a perfect little farm on the side of the road where we picked our fill of delicious fresh strawberries.  Next stop on the journey was an hour-long line at Maple View Farm for a bowl of ice cream (if you haven't figured it out already, ice cream is pretty much a staple of my life).  The ice cream was amazing as always, however I like the line situation better in the dead of winter when we visited last.  Duly noted for next time.

All that said, below is a small glimpse of all of that bopping around.  Enjoy!

This Week in Photos: Week 12

April 3 - 10, 2016

This was quite the week. I observed a kindergarten classroom at Ravenscroft learning about what it means to be resilient through bubbles and balloons, and a high school Biology Lab testing their DNA and comparing it to DNA of people and things from around the world.  We went to the Durham Bulls game opener, which turned out to be a very windy and wet event, but they came home with with W over Charlotte!  The week ended with a rest in the hammock, and watching an intense documentary on mountain climbing, which of course involved popcorn and a photoshoot.

Enjoy.

This Week in Photos: Week 11

March 28 - April 2, 2016

The majority of my week was spent on campus at Ravenscroft where I've been working on a series of videos to further explain their Lead from Here initiative (don't know what that is?  Stand by for June and those videos will tell you much more!).  My featured photos for this week take you inside the classrooms where lower school parents, and students grade 5 and grade 3 partook in a couple of learning activities and reflection discussions revolving around one particular topic.  I gotta say, these kids were cracking me up!  Observing and capturing these types of lessons has served as a reminder to me of how truly amazing and raw young minds can be!  I have to remember to tap into that side of my brain from time to time and see what happens :).

This Week in Photos: Week 10

March 21 - March 27, 2016

This past week was packed full of beautiful moments worth preserving!  It started off on a high note when we welcomed our new nephew, Thomas Darcy Hunter into the family.  I'm certain there will be more baby photos of him to come soon :).  Easter was the perfect bookend to the week, which we celebrated with family in Raleigh.  Easter egg hunts, pastel whoopie pies and naps were involved.

I spent most of the middle of the week in Raleigh shooting video on Ravenscroft's campus for a project I'm working on there.  Those kids go WILD when they see a camera, which made for some fun stills.  As I distracted them from their gym class, one of the lower school girls asked me, "are you an adult or a kid?"  I reluctantly told her I was an adult...but like being a kid way better...

Last but not least, Matt and I worked on our DIY stand-up desk project in Sanford with his grandfather and cousin.  I'd say it's making some great progress - just needs a new coat of paint and some stain and it'll be ready to roll soon!  Definitely one-of-a-kind.  Final shots to come.

Enjoy!

March 14 - March 20, 2016

This week is a small batch, mostly focused on some more of the interesting things I saw around me with shadows, lighting and reflections.  I'm also working on a new DIY project so there's a sneak peak into that work as well.  More before-and-afters to come...

This Week in Photos: Week 7

February 29 - March 6, 2016

This was a hard week of work and a fun weekend of play!  On Thursday, I took pics for Urban Ministries of Durham's Empty Bowls annual benefit at the Durham Convention Center.  This year was a record breaker for them, raising $109,000 to offer food, shelter and necessities for our neighbors in need.  Local artists crafted up beautiful bowls for guests to take with them and local restaurants and culinary services cooked up some delicious soups to sample.  The People's Choice award went to Brock Premier Culinary Services with their Sweet Corn and Poblano Pepper Chowder, but there were some pretty solid contenders.

This weekend our dear friends, Amanda and Kelly came down from Boston for a visit so we hit up some local must-sees.  Lunch at Trophy Brewing Company, Yahtzee at Crank Arm, Bonbons at Viederi, Arsenal v Tottenham rivalry game at Bull McCabes, UNC v Duke rivalry at Fullsteam, and a nice hike through Eno River State Park.  All in all it was a pretty solid week.

This Week in Photos: Week 6

February 22 - 28

This week I survived my first tornado warning.  I've lived through many Nor'easters and came out on top (once we shoveled ourselves out) - I know how to do snow.  But tornados are a whole new ball game for me.  On the one hand, I was thoroughly enjoying watching the crazy clouds roll in like angry waves.  It brought me back to when I was a little girl sitting on the front porch listening to the thunder with my dad during the many April storms that passed over Hanover, MA.  On the other hand, the folks on the weather channel were urging me to take cover and find a safe place ASAP.  It seemed contradicting that I was supposed to hide out to let the storm pass, not knowing what was coming or going when looking out my window off in the distance I could see the sun poking through.  But what do I know?  So I anxiously balanced snapping some pics, with running downstairs to check the TV to see where the storm was headed next just in case I needed to take cover fast.  Needless to say, we survived unscathed.  I do know that some other surrounding areas were not so lucky.   Although I would have been in awe if I had caught a glimpse of a tornado, the damage they cause is breathtaking and absolutely devastating, so I consider myself lucky for being in the clear.

The rest of the week after that was fairly uneventful - photowalks around town, peeking into the windows of the new Nanasteak next door (welcome to the neighborhood!), Mexican food for Minnie's 3rd birthday, kiddos splashing in the puddles after the storm, and a trip to Durham's Museum of Life and Science.

Enjoy!

This Week in Photos: Week 5

February 15 - 21

This week started off in Durham with a cold ice storm but ended with 65 degrees and sunshine.  The spring-like weather came just in time to celebrate my niece, Minnie's birthday.  And what better way to celebrate 3 years of life than a yard full of friends and baby farm animals?!  (Farm animals provided by Farmer Mary & daughter, Elizabeth from Winterpast Farm; awesome and delicious pink horse cake created by Heather Warren of Yummy in my Tummy).

In the days before the party, Matt and I stayed busy dog sitting my dog brother-in-law, Gus.  He's a massive golden retriever full of energy and snuggles.  His slumber party kickstarted with a nice bath, which made for some fun pics and a very wet bathroom.  His visit only peaked the puppy fever we have going on...

Midweek I was lucky enough to attend a retreat at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro for a video project I'm working on for Ravenscroft School.  More visuals to come on that later on.

The week ended on a high note with a super fun and energetic family shoot for Lou Goodmon's 5th birthday.  If you're ever in need of unique and interesting pose ideas, Lou's your gal to consult!

Enjoy!

This Week in Photos: Week 4

February 8 - 14

This was yet another wonderful week!  We had an impromptu visit from the nephew and brother-in-law, so Monuts was of course included in that.  Playtime that day consisted of petting a wooden lady bug and playing with a whoopee cushion so hard that it broke.

The long weekend was a fun adventure with my closest friends.  We visited our alma mater, Elon University (raided the bookstore, got lost in all the new buildings, made sure the tours we ran into on campus knew Elon was one of the best choices they could make).  Abbie fulfilled my puppy fix.  She eventually got used to me doting on her and taking probably too many pics.

On Valentine's Day we had a play session with my friend's in-laws then stuffed our faces with delicious food from Parker & Otis, Nanataco and Parlour ice cream.  Durham definitely does not have a shortage of amazing cuisine!

Mixed in with a few shots of the rain and ice, that about wraps up the week! Enjoy.

This Week in Photos: Week 3

February 1 - 7

This week I visited the magical state of Colorado.  The trip started in Denver where we ate and drank our way through town (some stops en route:  lunch and boozy shakes at Steuben's, a tour and whiskey tasting at Stranahans Distillery, a stop at The Infinite Monkey Theorem which was sadly closed but we'll be back to enjoy soon!, a walk through Union Station with a pitstop at the Terminal Bar, a flight at Denver Beer Company, and an amazingly delicious burger at My Brother's Bar, which also takes the prize for best website on the Internet).  After picking up the rest of the crew at the airport, we all made our way to Colorado Springs where we met Logan, my new four-legged buddy.  She, of course, got her own photo shoot as you'll see below.  In the Springs we explored the Garden of the Gods, a stunning natural beauty definitely worth seeing.

The rest of the weekend was spent hanging around Breckenridge.  That place is...wow.  The 360-degree mountain panoramic view never got old.  It blows me away how beautiful the world can be.  Skiing was some of the best I've done too.  I'll let the pictures tell the story, but they definitely don't do the scenery justice so you'll have to go visit yourself to truly take it all in!

This week was a great one (probably because it involved a lot of eating)!  Matt and I collected our PictureDURM/Artstigators contest prizes from the Nasher Museum and Mad Hatter Bakeshop (thanks again!) and took advantage of some fun photo opportunities while at each place.  Elizabeth, the pastry chef at Mad Hatter is a magician - the cupcakes are top-notch on the tasty scale and look really pretty too.  Check them out if you haven't already!  Winston-Salem was on the weekend docket, where we got in a lot of nephew playtime, relaxed on the Wake Forest quad, and enjoyed a few local eats and brews at Small Batch Beer Co., Hoots and The Porch.  We capped it off with a walk through the Food Truck Rodeo at the Durham Farmer's Market.

January 17 - 24, 2016

This week's highlights: a surprise visit from my parents and nephew, Matty, riding horses on the farm in Sanford, NC, our first snow storm in Durham, our failed attempt to sled in said snowstorm in the parking deck, taking the winning photo for PictureDURM and Artstigator's Instagram contest!, some droplets from the melting snow and some artsy experiments with a yellow pepper.

2015 Highlights

As the first week of 2016 wraps up, I want to take a second to reflect on the amazing moments of 2015.  Last year was a great one!  It took us to many places around the world: from the White Mountains in NH to the Blue ridge Mountains in NC, to St. Thomas to Italy, Croatia and other amazing places in between.  I am grateful for everyone that I met along the way who trusted me to capture their special life moments.  THANK YOU!!

I'm looking forward to seeing what 2016 has in store and hope to meet many more new faces along the way!  Here are some highlights that sum up the year.
